San Francisco Rent a Car and Areas to Avoid in San Francisco
Staying safe in a foreign city can often be difficult, especially when you arent familiar with central neighborhoods and local hangouts. Although San Francisco is a relatively safe city to visit there are still a few areas which travelers should pay special attention to. Whether youre sightseeing in your San Francisco rent-a-car or window shopping at a local market, Super Cheap highly encourages all of their customers to keep an eye out for unusual behavior and suspicious activity when visiting these communities. Super Cheap highly recommends avoiding many of these areas if at all possible especially once the sun begins to set. Theses areas include:
- The BART Station: The Oakland Bay Area Rapid Transit Station can often appear extremely intimidating once the sun has set and the after-work crowd has cleared the platform. If you must take the train at night Super Cheap recommends bringing along a few San Francisco rent-a-car friends to help keep you company and make you feel more comfortable. Danger Rating = 2 (where 1 is not dangerous and 5 is highly dangerous).
- The Lower Tenderloin: The Tenderloin District is a triangular area located between Market and Van Ness, stopping a couple of blocks just before Union Square at the Hilton hotel. The upper section of this neighborhood is relatively safe, but Super Cheap highly recommends avoiding visiting the lower neighborhood for any reason during your upcoming San Francisco rent-a-car vacation. This area at Market between 6th and Van Ness is one of San Francisco most notorious neighborhoods, due in part to a thriving drug community and numerous seedy adult entertainment venues. If you encounter any trouble while in this area simply dial 911 from any public phone there are two police stations located within the district, so a response should be somewhat instantaneous. Danger Rating = 4
- Bayview-Hunters Point: This neighborhood is by far San Franciscos worst, so please try your best to avoid it at all hours. Fortunately its hard to get lost in this area as it houses no notable landmarks or significant tourist attractions. Most buses avoid this section of town as should you. The only reason any Super Cheap San Francisco rent-a-car tourist would travel to Hunters Point and thats to see the 49ers play at 3Com. If youre planning on taking in a game remember to stick to the specified exits and avoid traveling through the ghetto. Danger Rating = 5.
- The Haight Ashbury: This culturally diverse neighborhood is a fantastic tourist attraction during the day, but Super Cheap recommends avoiding it once the sun starts to set. San Francisco rent-a-car clients can expect to be panhandled mercilessly in this neighborhood, especially in the lower neighborhood. To avoid stirring up trouble simply say sorry and continue walking. As long as there are plenty of people around you should be completely safe. Danger Rating = 2
- North of the Cow Palace: If youre planning on catching an event at San Franciscos famous Cow Palace make sure that you avoid parking your car anywhere north of the arena. Parking on a side street may save you some extra cash, but it can also put your life in danger. Tourists are especially vulnerable in The Swamps, or Sunnydale neighborhood, which is located just a couple of blocks north of the cow Palace entertainment complex. The threat of drugs and violence is high here, especially at night, so try your best to stay away. Danger Rating = 4.
Chinatown: Once again it is recommended that Super Cheap San Francisco car rental customers avoid navigating this section of the city alone after dark. Park your vehicle close to your event venue and avoid walking down any unlit alleyways. Danger Rating = 1.
Like most other big American cities it pays to stay alert when walking or driving the streets of San Francisco. A good rule of thumb to remember if it looks scary, chances are it is! Avoid any streets that appear to be poorly maintained and you should have a problem during your upcoming San Francisco rent-a-car vacation!
